The New York Times reports that on January 2, 2021, a 28 year old man driving an SUV, and all eight occupants of an F-150 pickup truck driven by a female, were killed. The lives lost include seven minors between the ages 6 to 15 years old, per the Fresno County Sheriff's Office.
Eight victims were killed after the F-150 burst into flames, the authorities said. The driver of the SUV also lost his life.
Officials have not released the victims' names. The CHP says it 's working with the Fresno County Coroner's Office about whether alcohol or drugs might have played a role in the accident.
The crash happened at about 8 p.m. local time on State Route 33, near the Fresno County-Kings County line, when the SUV, a 2013 Dodge Journey driven by Daniel Luna, 28, of Avenal, was traveling southbound at an unknown speed, reports the CHP.
As Daniel Luna approached a 2007 Ford F-150 pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction, Luna veered onto the dirt shoulder, lost control and drove back across the centerline, slamming head-on into the pickup, the CHP said.
The pickup truck, which was driven by a woman, became "fully engulfed in flames," and all eight occupants of the truck were killed, officials said.
